As you can see above I don’t do much in my life. Nothing in my daily routine can tie into issues of the fashion industry except shipping my clothes, looking for new ones to buy, and browsing social media. I resell, which is basically buying an article of clothing or accessory and selling it for more than what you paid. As you continue to engage in the cycle, you can make hundreds and thousands of dollars. This is becoming a problem within the fashion industry because there are people who pay ridiculous amounts of money for clothing that they couldn’t get there hands on, due to companies releasing items in limited quantities. This often leads to violence, police confrontations, and many other problems. Companies release products in limited quantities for long term increase in profit margins. As resale price and hype increases, retail price increases right along with it. Greedy companies usually do this to invest more in more product instead of  trying to use sustainable materials, paying factory workers abroad more, and making working conditions better for them. The only positive thing that comes out of reselling is if you pay 800 dollars for a hoodie you won’t be too eager to just dispose of it, you will try to sell it. Creating a market where people buy and sell second hand clothing because there are limited quantites of things.

Another thing you can observe from my day is that I browse social media a lot. I don’t have it noted but when I’m on the subway I check social media even more. Social media is a huge problem in the fashion industry, due to the promotion of mass consumerism. Companies often display promotions, collaborations with celebrities, and new clothing through the 4 major social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Consumerism is a very serious issue when talking about fashion because it is one of the key contributors of pollution within the fashion industry. Fast fashion brands like Forever 21, Zara, and H&M always have advertisements everywhere knowing that people are going to dispose their goods after a few washes. These companies know their goods don’t last more than 10 washes, and they continue to promote their goods for an increase in profit margins that will go to no pertinent cause. These goods often just end up in a landfill releasing methane gases into the atmosphere. The thing that is so bad about this is that with reselling there is something beneficial for the environment that comes out of it, with consumerism there is nothing that comes from it at all that is good for the environment.

Something I overlooked within reselling was shipping. A few weeks ago I had a post about Global Freight and its negative effects. Diesel gases and CO2 make our air very polluted and strip away at the ozone layer, and deteriorate the atmosphere as stated by Malia Brown. As time progresses this will be fixed due to companies like Tesla making electric vehicles that are good for the environment. Something that will not be fixed with an easy solution is consumerism, this will forever be a problem until people realize the damage they are doing to the environment and the government recognizes that they are the only people who can help with the destruction of our planet.

  1. I completely agree with your idea that the government is in controll of really making a beneficial change to the deconstruction. Consumers can try and make a movement but at the end of the day the government and policies is the only way to make huge differences. Great post 💡💡
