Refibra: Reborn Tencel Fiber

On Wednesday, January 24th, 2018 I visited Texworld at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Here I found several businesses with sustainable practices; however, one in particular stood out to me. The company Refibra was unique in the sense that it uses a fiber from wood called Tencel. The dictionary definition of Tencel is “a cellulosic fiber obtained from wood pulp using recyclable solvents.” This innovative way of producing a new fiber out of natural and recyclable material is a step in the right direction. The company’s slogan is “closing the loop in textiles.” This is a wonderful way to incorporate ethical change to the fashion industry. This also helps with the idea of being conscious on what we put on our bodies as well as in with this new, organic fiber.

The picture below captures the enormity of the change this single change to pure fibers can do. I do believe this is the beginning of a revolution into more businesses realizing the importance of sustainable products leading to a better future for fashion and our world as a whole.

The business, Refibra, even took the initiative a step further by putting a QR code on the tags so the customers would be able to learn more about their strategy behind incorporating sustainability in textiles.
Overall, the innovation behind this idea of pure fibers is one to keep your eyes on because it could be the start of a new vision of fashion.

  1. Hey Ashley,
Great blog post! I completely agree that we should be conscious on what we are wearing because the garments are on our bodies. The business Refibra does a great job in producing new fiber out of natural and recyclable materials, which is definitely helping our planet. I also think that their slogan of “closing the loop in textiles” is very clever! Lastly, I find it extremely beneficial that they put a QR code on the tags in order to advise people more about what they stand for in sustainable fashion!

That you went and did more research after you left Texworld is truly appreciated. As well when you write: "…enormity of the change this single change to pure fibers can do”! So well said and bravo!
