A paradigm? Sounds
like a shape, doesn’t it? It’s the way we understand the world and go about our
daily lives. Little do people know, but reconfiguring our paradigm is what
could save us in the long run.
Our current manufacturing and consuming cycle involves
little products and large wastes, to be briefly used before being sent to the
landfill. If we continue these ways, we will live on a planet that’s covered in
waste. A planet that’s covered in filth is dying, and we need to save it.
In order to stop this from occurring, we must change our
paradigm. This is where we benefit from a circular economy. A circular economy
involves reusing and recycling all items and materials, and using renewable
resources at a lower rate; a rate that is lower than their natural rate of
renewal.
This helps to cut the rate of waste that’s being created and
harming us slowly. An equitable economy allows for a balance in the creation of
goods and our consumption patterns. As humans in this day in age, we want the
newest things and nicest things. Why do these items have to come at such a
harmful price?
As students looking to pursue a career in fashion, we have
the power to take control. Creating new styles of clothing, accessories, etc.,
does NOT have to be as wasteful as we are allowing it to be. There are brands already making these efforts to make a difference in the industry. Using
recycled plastics to recreate fibers and use them to make new garments or
accessories, reusing old garments to make new ones, and using natural dyes are
just of the few ways. Cutting back on water usage as well as energy used is
also a statistics that needs to be cut down.
There must be an equitable economy, an economy that is fair
to both its inhabitants and the Earth we live on. Changing out paradigm can be
seen as a difficult task but it is important for the welfare of our planet.
