It's Up To Us by Elizabeth Cordi and Maday Alonso

It’s up to us to change our future
By Elizabeth Cordi and Maday Alonso

Greenhouse gases, coal plants, deforestation, the burning of fossil fuels, and global warming. All of us have heard one of these words at some point in our lives. Most people dismiss those problems for many reasons. Some of those reasons being that they can’t see the problem because it’s happening somewhere else in the world or they choose to not believe in it.

What’s it going to take to realize that we need to change in order for our planet to be sustainable?

Water, food supply, oil, gas, and fossil fuels are limited resources that will eventually run out. As humans, we constantly drain those resources and pollute our world.

We all know someone who doesn’t believe in global warming but the earth’s climate has changed drastically throughout history due to our own irresponsibility. The atmosphere is a very vulnerable layer so when greenhouse gases (c02 and methane) are released into the air they thicken the atmosphere and trap warmth. With c02 being released faster than ever, our planet is warming up more than ever. This is a bad thing because warmer temperatures mean more forest fires. The extra heat being created by global warming goes right into the ocean. Causing ice-bergs to melt and sea levels to rise. The next time you hear someone say that they don’t believe in global warming tell them that the hottest year ever measured was 2016, 2017 and 2018 is predicted to be on that list. We need to realize that climate change is a huge problem. Our water and food supply is at risk! As temperatures increase, both people and crops are going to demand more water. This creates a huge problem for each of the spheres (biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and atmosphere) because they work together as a system.

 Can we change?

One of the solutions that can help change our planet is renewable energy. Solar panels can be installed on the tops of homes, business, and factories. Windmills are a renewable, clean, and affordable way to supply electricity. Other ways include reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling.

Will we change?

It’s up to us to encourage change by using our voice and spreading the word about sustainability. We need to make smart choices, educate others, and vote for people with more power than us who will help implement these changes that will ultimately save our planet.

  1. Hi Maday and Elizabeth, you presented great information that definitely applies to us all in terms of taking responsibility for climate change. I think that one of the strongest points you made was about the rising sea levels, which will affect us greatly in New York City, but also affect how we run the fashion industry. It would be great to really expand on the urgency for change because the fashion industry has caused so much harm to the planet. I definitely think that it will not only affect our lifestyles but also how we feel and are able to function in our jobs in fashion. Off shore sourcing and manufacturing can be even more difficult, while they have contributed to a large part of the negative impact on the planet. We can’t reverse it but we can change the way we approach our fashion cycle to ensure that Mother Nature can survive and carry on hers.

  2. Hi guys!

I really like your lists of problems that our planet is encountering. It really helps to grab attention and cause “oh wow” moments. Hopefully someone who does not believe in global warming will stumble upon this post and see why they should care. I also really like how you mention the hottest years recorded, have been the past few years and this year will be on that list. The raise in temperatures is not hard to notice since we have been experience huge temperature changes from one day to the next, and the summer’s have been hotter than ever.

    Great post!

  3. Hello Maday & Elizabeth!

First of all, great post!!! I really enjoyed learning more about global warming and the relation that the fashion industry has to this epidemic. It is so unfortunate that some people are still in denial about global warming and climate change. The numbers speak for themselves and it is shocking to learn that temperatures are rising year after year. Yes, we can change! Me must work together and one of the first things we can begin doing is striving to obtain and great renewable energy. We should also reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as possible. Your visual depiction of the world is very powerful since it shows how marine life can be impacted and how sea levels can rise. Let’s work together to create a sustainable future!

  4. Hey Maday and Elizabeth,
I loved reading your blog post! Climate change and global warming are so important, and whether people believe in it or not, the facts are all there to show this issue at hand. We can change and you came up with several great ways to make a change to our planet. Your visual was great and tied together very well with your text. Moving forward, especially as a fashion student, which is the 2nd most polluting industry, we must change and create a positive impact to our spheres.

  5. Elizabeth and Maday-
You are so right that most people dismiss the words and scenarios of greenhouse gases, deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, etc….. And… you are also right- it is because we can’t SEE the problem (out of sight, out of mind, right?)
And- I LOVE this question that you ask: “What’s it going to take to realize that we need to change in order for our planet to be sustainable?” OMG- what a great query? What is it going to take????
what I really like is closer to the end when you write: “One of the solutions that can help change our planet is renewable energy” (you offer a tangible solution), as well when you type: “It’s up to us to encourage change by using our voice and spreading the word…” (here you offer a suggestion of an action for readers to take). That’s uplifting and hopeful. THANK YOU!
