R&R Luxury: Coterie TradeShow- Maria Lieggi

During my time at Coterie, I visited several companies and the majority of them stated they were "sustainable." What does "sustainable" mean to these companies? How do they identify themselves as sustainable? Some of these "sustainable" companies may be just looking at the surface. Companies that are looking at sustainability on a superficial level maybe labeling themselves as sustainable because of JUST their use of producing their merchandise with organic, natural- raw materials.

Well, what about factory workers? Are they getting a fair wedge? Are they getting proper lunch breaks? These are some of the questions we as consumers should be asking "sustainable" companies. Companies who treat their factory workers with respect, a fair wedge, and a safe environment, they produce a more ethical product and break the surface layer of the sustainable label.
Stated in their pamphlet: One of the companies that caught my attention was a company called R&R Luxury. This company is a sustainable beauty company that is manufactured, produced and distributed in Ghana, Africa. R&R is a luxury brand founded on the philosophy of transforming one of nature's purest and richest gifts--Shea-- into the most enriching beauty products. R&R specializes in beauty products such as Shea Oil, African Black Soap, etc.

R&R Luxury's Shea Butter is processed by a women's cooperative, especially put together to process high-quality unrefined Shea Butter.  The manufacturer provides these cooperative societies with loans, credit facilities and quality control expertise and a higher price for their quality processed Shea Butter. This initiative has in the medium term, alleviated poverty amongst the rural women and in, the long-term, provides employment opportunities for rural women and young people.
With the purchase of one of these R&R Luxury Beauty products you contribute and invest in the families, communities, and environment of these working employees.

R&R Luxury is guided by the core values of ethical sourcing and nature preservation, R&R uses 100% natural Shea butter and other unrefined natural ingredients in all its formulations, that are sourced directly from the Shea countryside of Ghana, West Africa. Ghaha, West Africa is the only region in the world where the mythical Shea tree has been growing for thousands of years.

During the harvesting process of the nut that produces the Shea Butter products, these women collect and peel these nuts by hand. Just like any other tree, this nut tree has cycles throughout the year where the tree does not produce the nut. During the time the women continue to work in the factories but instead of working they are learning more sustainable and productive qualities such as sewing, reading, writing, etc.
R&R Luxury Beauty gives a fantastic example of what a "sustainable" company truly is. All of the key factors of what makes a company sustainable, they have accomplished, and they will continue to spread ethical values to their workers, consumers, and other companies in the years to come.
