Now that it has been established that the
fight for sustainability is not a trend but rather a movement, and an utterly
necessary one, it is important to really dissect what has already been done to
the living systems and how to prevent further damage.
For decades, the fashion industry has been has had a
negative effect on almost all living systems it came in contact with. The drive
for profit and to meet the global demand for fast fashion items, far outweighed
the need to protect the earth. Due to this mentality, the fashion industry has
destroyed natural habitat of many animals, they have polluted the soil and
waterways, depleted water resources and damaged the atmosphere through carbon
emissions. Additionally the fashion industry is currently
over-using the natural resources which significantly disturbs the ecological
balance.
Today, although we, sustainable earth thinkers, have not started reversing the damage already
caused, are taking small steps in the right direction. Some big companies are
also jumping on-board, with Burberry being the latest company that will not
only stop using real fur but will stop burning excess unsold items. London
Fashion Week is going fur-free for the first time since its inception and
companies such as H&M and Cotton On are choosing more transparency when it
comes to production of their garments.
The problem
with the non-earth thinkers, is that they are assuming
infinite resources in a finite world. Unfortunately, in the long run, that is
not a sustainable business model. Luckily we live in an era, where customers
not only want but demand transparency when it comes to fashion and
sustainability. A large number of businesses are trying to change their ways
and do the right thing by every living system, but we still have a long way to
go. Being an earth-thinker is non-negotiable if we want the future generations
to be able to experience even a fraction of the natural beauty we were
fortunate enough to enjoy.
