The Mara Hoffman corporate office delivers an outdoors atmosphere where natural lighting comes in from various directions, wooden floors and desks give a nature feel and with the addition of tall green plants for a pop of color. Having an open place like this made me very comfortable and appreciative of the beauty of nature. It was also great to see how the brand is sustainable by using see through windows for natural lighting instead of artificial lighting which emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and adds onto climate change. To add, using plants as a means to decorate instead of wasting unnecessary materials is also a nice touch many more brands should think of following.

After 15 years in the business industry, Mara Hoffman’s son started to shift her mindset because she realized whatever she did now would affect her son in the future. Her connection with spirituality and sustainability helped Mara Hoffman become a more sustainable brand. For example, the company now chooses to design with natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, hemp, and recycled nylon (for swimsuits). The brand also has a fiber choice of using somewhat sustainable trims made from plastics and metals which are only partially recycled. Even food like sustainably grown nuts are transformed into buttons. The brand shows an advanced front with using several fibers and having sustainable information to back up their choices. For example, hemp is one of the most sustainable fabrics, it is naturally resistant to pests, it requires less water than other fabrics, etc. and therefore Mara Hoffman chooses to use this fabric although many companies are still hesitant in even experimenting with the product.

In 2016, the brand began using compostable bags instead of plastic bags. The brand is even sustainable with online orders so consumers receive a compostable plastic poly bag when ordering swimsuits online. These bags have the ability to decompose in landfills quicker than plastic and can also be added to compost where it will biodegrade within months. Furthermore, the brand understands the necessity for organic dyes to ensure raw materials have not been in contact with numerous harmful chemicals thats checked through testing.
